Here is a simple comparison I did between the xbox 360 and the dreamcast controller. did the xbox 360 controller get copied?
Dude their both by microsoft and peter moore was with both of themdid the xbox 360 controller get copied?
Dude their both by microsoft and peter moore was with both of them
Really? Both made by microsoft? Explain...
They BOTH were made by microsoft? Really? I never knew.
they really don't look that similar to me. I think the colors are making it seem more alike than it really is.
The 360 controller borrows ideas from pretty much every tradition controller since the NES. Thats not a bad thing at all, since I think its the best we've had yet.
i always thought the 360 and dreamcast controllers looked similar as well:
|If you want to be fair, the standard controllers that the PS3 and 360 use are just Super NES pads with 2 joysticks and 2 extra shoulder or trigger buttons. In turn, that was just 2 extra face buttons and 2 shoulder buttons away from a NES controller.
Sock Master's Game Console Controller Family Tree:http://www.axess.com/twilight/console/''How did the current home-console controllers come to be? How have they evolved? You may have noticed some similarities between the current generation controllers, or between them and the previous generations of controllers. So, how do they all tie together? ''-Sock Master
Other than the fact that the face buttons share the same letters, the two controllers look to be different in every way imaginable. That's even without delving into the fact that the X360 controller has 2 more shoulder buttons, an extra analogue stick, a Home button, and a select button.

The 360 more accurately copied the Gamecube controller, in terms of analog stick layout (arguably the most important factor of a controller). Which is good, because the Gamecube did the analog sticks right. The 360 controller was pretty much Xbox 1 controller + GC controller. And the Xbox controller was a fairly direct Dual Shock ripoff (at least that's the way it seemed to me).

So controllers CAN give birth! Well then of course everything you just stated is, indeed, a fact. Silly me.

''-Sock Master
Awesome link there! Longtime gamers know every controller is based in some way shape or form on previous controllers. Everyone has copied everyone in some degree. What gets me in this type of discussion is not if a controller is similar but rather other design choices. Look at the Gamecubes controller ports, they look exactly like the Dreamcast's.
I realized this a long time ago with the original Xbox controller. The original Xbox controller was clearly modelled after the Dreamcast controller which was modelled after the Sega Saturn Analog controller. The Controller S was simply a smaller version of that, the Xbox 360 controller is simply a slight remix of that. This is the true origin of them all, folks.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Sega_saturn_analog_controller.jpg
Who cares? As long as the controller lets you play games, does it really matter if it was copied or not?
They're kinda similar, but who cares.
There's no question the xbox and the xbox 360 controller ''borrowed'' many elements from the Dreamcast controller. If you've ever owned a Dreamcast, it's impossible not to see the similarites.
